The Professional Muskie Angler Circuit™ (Pro-MAC™) hosted the Muskie Masters Open Championship™ on the Namakagon Chain this past Weekend on June 22nd and 23rd. The Namakagon Muskie Masters Open Championship™ was the third qualifying event of a six tournament schedule for the 2013 Pro-MAC™ season and was a prelude to the season ending Invitational Championship™ that will also be held on the Namakagon Chain that could see a record $80,000.00 first place cash pay-out and a purse of more than $140,000.00 (with full fields of scheduled events). Although only six muskies over 34 inches would be scored for the tilt, the very impressive forty one and a quarter (41 ¼”) inch average and the numerous chances at fifty inch (50”) or larger muskies kept the competitors enthusiasm at a feverish pitch and will no doubt be a compelling draw for those rewarded teams that qualify for the Championship.
The perfect conditions at the 6:00am starting time of Saturday's competition had the confidence of the tournament anglers of great results. While the getting was good, three nice fish had been registered with the first coming at 6:23am when Kevin and Scott Abendroth landed a dandy 44 incher. Another quality fish would be landed at 7:18am when Randy Kauranen and Phil Markgraf measured a 40.50 incher but the largest muskie of the day would shortly follow when Matts Holland and Steve Genson tallied a 47” beauty at 7:25am. Shortly after the run of three muskies over forty inches, the driving rains arrived and high winds made boat control and lure presentations nearly impossible. One more muskie would be” put on the board” for the first day and that would come from the brothers Abendroth with their second of the day at 11:09am that scored 35.75 inches giving the duo 79.75 inches (79.75 points) and the victory.
Although the rains of Saturday had become just a memory, the troubling winds persisted for Sunday's competition continuing to complicate angler's plans. The first muskie of the day would have to wait until 10:15am when the father and son team of Tim and Tom Mathu scored on the largest muskie of the day that measured 41 inches. The second and final muskie of the day and contest would come at 11:51am by Scott Kieper and Paul Neste that tallied 39 inches.
The top five finishers for the 2013 Pro-MAC™ Namakagon Chain Muskie Masters Open Championship™ were: 1st - Kevin & Scott Abendroth 2nd - Matts Holland/Steve Genson 3rd - Tim & Tom Mathu 4th - Randy Kauranen/Phil Markgraf 5th - Paul Neste/Scott Kieper
